Matthew studied Conducting with Dr John Stringer during his undergraduate studies at the University of York. He gained experience directing chamber concerts as part of the York University Lunchtime Concert Series, as well as conducting vocal chamber groups and school ensembles through workshop projects set up in local Yorkshire primary and secondary schools.

Since moving to London in 2007, Matthew began work with Sonus Cantorum Chamber Choir and set up his current sixteen voice chamber choir Sonitus Chamber Choir, a joint venture with ex-RCM composition graduate Stuart Murray-Turnbull. Matthew is Director of Shalford Choral Society and runs primary school singing workshops on behalf of Rochester Cathedral's Chorister Outreach Programme. He was recently appointed Music Director for the News International Choir and will guide them through this year's Music in Offices Competition, in association with BBC Radio 3.
Other work includes cover work for John Gibbons with St Alban's Chamber Choir and the Lord William Festival Chorus in Oxfordshire. Matthew has worked with the Chorus of Hampstead Garden Opera and has accompanied private recitals, vocal teaching, choral workshops and ABRSM exams.
