Conducting

Matthew studied Conducting with Dr John Stringer during his undergraduate studies at the University of York. He began directing chamber concerts as part of the York University Lunchtime Concert Series, as well as conducting vocal chamber groups and school ensembles through workshop projects set up in local Yorkshire primary and secondary schools.

Since moving to London in 2007, Matthew began work with Sonus Cantorum Chamber Choir and set up his current sixteen voice chamber choir Sonitus Chamber Choir, a joint venture with ex-RCM composition graduate Stuart Murray-Turnbull. Matthew is Director of Shalford Choral Society and works as a Choral Animateur on behalf of the Rochester Cathedral Chorister Outreach Programme, funded by Sing Up. Matthew is also Music Director of the News International Choir of London and was recently appointed Music Director of the Take Note Singers of Lambeth and the Reading Gay Chorus. Last year, Matthew guided the NIC through the Music in Offices Competition, in association with Classic FM, and Shalford Choral Society through the Leith Hill Music Festival 2010.

Other work includes cover work for John Gibbons with choirs including St Alban's Chamber Choir and the Lord William Festival Chorus in Oxfordshire. Matthew has worked as a cover chorusmaster and accompanist with Hampstead Garden Opera and has accompanied private recitals, vocal teaching, choral workshops and ABRSM exams.
