Matthew began his musical training in Bristol with Jane Griffiths at the age of seven. His first professional role came at the age of 10, appearing as 'Tommy' in the national tour of Tommy at the Bristol Hippodrome in 1997. This led to several appearances over a six year period in numerous stage productions and choral concerts at venues including the Bristol Old Vic, the Royal Albert Hall and Colston Hall.
Matthew studied as a Bass-Baritone with Soprano Yvonne Seymour at the University of York, graduating with a BA(Hons) in Music in July 2007. He performed as singer and accompanist in workshops with Professor Peter Seymour, Stephen Varcoe and Emma Kirkby. Matthew has performed as a Bass soloist in performances of Bach's St Matthew Passion, Magnificat and B Minor Mass, Purcell's Fairy Queen and Venus & Adonis, Blow's Dido & Aeneas and LeFanu's The Three Strangers under the direction of several eminent academics. He developed an interest in English Song, particularly the work of Ivor Gurney. This led to a series of public recitals presenting war poetry settings in Yorkshire. Matthew joined the Blossom Street Singers as a Baritone in 2006 and with the group, performs numerous concert and corporate engagements in and around London.
